5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect supplementary UPS to use with home networking equipment, January 17, 2015

I've always used a UPS on my desktop computer, which I use to work from home - it's perfect for a short power outage or fluctuation, as happens here in semi-rural Arkansas during stormy or windy weather. Usually if we have a power outage it's for a few minutes at most, and if it goes on for more than 10 minutes I have a manual standby generator wired into a transfer switch so I can fire that up.

In the past I had my cable modem, router, and Ethernet switch all on my desk in my home office, so all were plugged into the same UPS that runs my desktop computer. When we moved a few months ago, the home office in my new house is now at one end of the house - not ideal spot for Wi-Fi for the house, so I wanted to locate the modem & router in another room, and the Ethernet switch went in the basement for convenience of wiring up a couple computers and a printer spread around the house.

I no sooner finished wiring everything up, when I realized - what happens with one of... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore most of the 1 to 3 star reviews as most are by Amaz-idiots and I will explain why. This is a NICHE/SPECIALTY use back-up!, September 26, 2015

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Connect BGE90M,120V, Network Backup with USB Charging ports (Electronics)
For heavens sake people, this is a NICHE item. Too many are confusing this with regular back-up units and that is somewhat comparing grapefruits and oranges. It only accepts 2 prong plugs or wall warts because it is ONLY FOR LOW POWER modems, routers or bridges or phone !!! It is NOT designed for your PC, TV, printer, cable box, etc! It is only to give you internet and/or phone availability during short power outages. The BG90M also can charge low power devices like your cell, e-cig battery or say a small tablet, as that model has two USB ports. It also provides surge protection for the LOW POWER electronics attached for blips, black and brown outs. When an event causes the power to go totally out, (lightening, car crash, tree limb falling, misguided squirrel) it automatically keeps the plugged in devices operational and with power using the units stored battery reserve. Most power outages are of a few hours or less, and if you have this, your internet. phone. even grandma's clock or... Read more

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this?)
Executive summary - This is a good unit that would rate 5 stars if it weren't for the flaky instructions.

Firstly, those instructions. I like to know what to expect from a device before I depend on it. This is especially true for infrastructure type stuff that will be set to its purpose and then hopefully ignored for years as it quietly does its job. I had to dig deep to figure out what to expect from this unit. The problem is that 125VA and 75W are not measures of capacity but the instructions assert that is the capacity. Amp-hours at the rated output voltage is a measure of capacity, but I couldn’t find that for this unit except for some hints on the box where it says something like: 10W for 3hr, 15W for 2hr, 20W for 1.5hr”. OK, all those indicate 30W-hr. the thing supposedly cuts off if the output power exceeds 75W, so that’s about 24 minutes at peak output. The 125VA thing means that the wall warts I plug in can draw at most about 1 amp.

Product Description

The APC Backups Connect BGE90M system offers guaranteed power protection for networking equipment (router, modem) and other low power devices (smart devices, VoIP or cordless phones, home automation and security systems). When power is disrupted due to storms or outages, the BGE70 keeps you connected to your network for up to 3 hours and charges smart devices. Get weather updates, make phone/video calls, check email, update social media, stream movies, and maintain home automation/security during extended power outages. The Backups Connect BGE90M is an innovative UPS that is designed to power networking equipment for prolonged periods during blackouts. Run a router, modem and another low-power device (power a VoIP or cordless phone, maintain your home security system) for 4.5 hours during a power outage. Additionally, 2 USB charging ports power smartphones and tablets during extended blackouts. Access to the internet is a critical component of our personal and professional lives. Unfortunately, a power outage breaks our line of communication for business operations, news and weather updates, and restricts us from contacting friends and family. At APC by Schneider Electric, we understand the network is critical to your everyday life. Backups Connect will keep your network running, even when the power goes out.
